Recovery from microplastic-induced marine deoxygenation may take centuries

چکیده
Abstract Climate change and plastics pollution are dual threats to marine environments. Here we use biogeochemical microplastic modelling show that even if there is complete removal of microplastics cessation deposition in the oceans 2022, regional recovery from microplastic-induced remineralization water column deoxygenation could take hundreds years for coastal upwelling zones, North Pacific Southern Ocean. Surface stratification reduced sea ice cover further impede recovery, highlighting importance aggressive mitigation plastic pollution.

Biogeosciences Discussions This discussion paper is/has been under review for the journal Biogeosciences (BG). Please refer to the corresponding final paper in BG if available. Abstract Given the complexity of quantitative collection, knowledge of the distribution of mi-croplastic pollution in many regions of the world ocean is patchy, both spatially and temporally, especially for the subsurfac...
متن کاملSusceptibility of Sardinella lemuru to emerging marine microplastic pollution
Marine microplastics are emerging pollutants that impact across levels of marine food chain at a global scale. Its presence was determined on Sardinella lemuru, a commercial pelagic fish that are harvested generally in the Northern Mindanao, consumed locally, and exported worldwide as bottled or canned sardine products. The stomach contents of 600 sardines were examined visually under...
متن کاملIngestion of microplastic has limited impact on a marine larva.
There is increasing concern about the impacts of microplastics (<1 mm) on marine biota. Microplastics may be mistaken for food items and ingested by a wide variety of organisms. While the effects of ingesting microplastic have been explored for some adult organisms, there is poor understanding of the effects of microplastic ingestion on marine larvae. Here, we investigated the ingestion of poly...
متن کاملMicroplastic ingestion decreases energy reserves in marine worms
The indiscriminate disposal of plastic to the environment is of concern. Microscopic plastic litter (<5 mm diameter; 'microplastic') is increasing in abundance in the marine environment, originating from the fragmentation of plastic items and from industry and personal-care products [1]. On highly impacted beaches, microplastic concentrations (<1mm) can reach 3% by weight, presenting a global c...
متن کاملLarge Recovery of Fish Biomass in a No-Take Marine Reserve
No-take marine reserves are effective management tools used to restore fish biomass and community structure in areas depleted by overfishing. Cabo Pulmo National Park (CPNP) was created in 1995 and is the only well enforced no-take area in the Gulf of California, Mexico, mostly because of widespread support from the local community. In 1999, four years after the establishment of the reserve, th...
